Got to love those Golden Arches
Recently Dereje and I went on a fantastic road trip with some very good friends of ours (Timmy, Nebu, and their baby Nathan) – Our destination was Sun City (South Africa) but the trek along the way really was just as fun as actually making it to Sun City. To start off, our trek across the border was quite the adventure because we decided to use a boarder post that was as popular as other border posts. Our thought was that it was a long holiday weekend and we wanted to beat all of the traffic. It turns out that one of the main reasons that this border post is not so popular is because after you cross from Botswana to South Africa it is completely dirt road. Not the quaint, "oh look I'm in Africa" kind of dirt road, but the kind of really hard dirt road that convinces you that your wheel bearings are about to fly off at any moment (I don't really know that wheel bearings are, but it sounds bad). Anyway, after traveling on that road for quite some time we finally made it to tar road and had smooth sailing to our hotel just outside of Sun City. Of course, the only reference I had on how to get to our lodge was that the internet said that it was next to the McDonalds…this information in no way excited me, but the idea of having a familiar land mark to go by was useful…I had never been so excited to see the golden arches after driving around the city asking a million people where this elusive McDonalds was. It wasn't until we reached our hotel that I learned that none of the Ethiopians I was traveling with had ever gone to a McDonalds…but that it was on their list of things to do. So, dinner at McDonalds it was. I have to say the burger tasted much better than I remembered and to eat it while seeing the delight on the faces of those who had only just heard about the legend of McDonalds was even better
