Okay, so other than being incredibly excited that I live in Botswana...get to speak the language...live with the locals...Yada, Yada, Yada...I have now found out how much I love being a tourist here! I am currently vacationing with my parents (an unexpected and fabulous surprise). We have been having an amazing adventure that is actually still underway, and getting more and more fabulous by the moment. We started off in Gaborone where I picked my parents up and then pretty much did an instant turn around where we ended up right smack in the middle (well, really the northern end) of the Okavango Delta! It was amazing...we had to fly into a little airstrip on a 6 seater plane, take an hour game drive to our campsite and were then greeted by the most amazing staff at the most beautiful and fairly authentic camp site! Now, when I say campsite, I'm not talking tents...It's actually beautiful log cabanas with screens for walls so you have a perfect view of the Delta right from your bed.
We were even close enough to have Hippos walk up to our room at night and munch on the grass around the hut! We were able to ride Mokoros (hollowed tree trunks...like a canoe), go on multiple, multiple, game drives and just sit and watch the wild life pass us! It was fantastic!! I think one of the best parts though was visiting with some of the locals that work there...they aren't used to peace corps volunteers (because frankly we can't afford this kind of stuff) so they were so excited to speak to a foreigner who actually spoke a bit of their language.
I had such a fantastic time. Now we are on our way to Zimbabwe for a really quick trip up to Victoria Falls. The falls are beautiful and they have all sorts of outdoor adventure stuff that is too good to pass up! About 6 years ago I went bungie jumping off of a bridge in Victoria falls...so this time my father and I have decided to do a triple adrenaline rush! We are doing a flying fox, a zip line and a gorge swing! I promise to explain what everything is in my next post...I can just guarantee that I will be feeling my mortality by the end of the day (not quite sure when I am going to grow up)! Will keep you posted!
