Two of my good girlfriends joined Dereje and I this weekend to celebrate Mardi Gras!
Mostly, we were just celebrating the fact that we finally got paid (our pay has to last three months…so you can imagine the "budgeting" nightmare).
We were hoping to celebrate by seeing Dreamgirls in Gabs, but it still hasn't arrived here.
So, instead, we drank a lot of iced coffee at a local coffee spot and did some fun shopping.
We don't really have open markets here in Botswana – which is such a shame – but there are some vendors that set up shop outside of a local mall that provide some fun shopping.
Most is the stuff is from Zim, Uganda, and Kenya…but at least it still African stuff…even if it's not from Botswana.

One thing I got excited about were these tapestries that are put together with tree bark – they come from Uganda and are just beautiful.
After a day of shopping (which consisted mostly of shopping for foods that we don't always readily have – i.e. I now have jalapeño peppers, olive oil and balsamic vinegar…which is really exciting) we went to and Ethiopian Braai (Braai = BBQ= grilling outside = eating with mosquitoes). I always enjoy hanging out with Dereje's friends because they are so welcoming and warm…and the food is fantastic! It turns out that and Ethiopian Braai is very similar to an Ethiopian dinner – the thing that makes it a braai is that we eat with our hands OUTSIDE…and drink beer…which is good enough for my braai standards.
